Editors bu pazar Off The Hook kapsamında İstanbul konserlerini verecek. Bize Editors hakkında ne söyleyeceksin?
Bu Editors’un Türkiye'ye ilk gelişi mi? Çünkü sana onların büyük bir sürpriz olduklarını söylemek istiyorum. Kesinlikle arkadaşlarım oldukları ve beraber iş yaptığımız için değil ama.
İyi bir canlı performans görmek kolay değil, hepimiz biliyoruz ki müzik sektörü ölüyor, buna rağmen bu genç çocuklar enfes bir canlı performans sunuyorlar. Ben gerçek bir müzik aşığı olarak çocukluğumdan beri birçok konser izledim ve Editors’ü sahnede görmenizi şiddetle tavsiye ediyorum. Onlar kısaca çılgınlar. Ve bir de sonrasında tanışma fırsatı bulursanız ne kadar mütevazi olduklarını göreceksiniz.

As you know Editors will be in concert in Istanbul this sunday as part of the Off The Hook series. What would you tell us about Editors?
Is this the first time Editors are in Turkey? Because I want to tell you something, it is a big surprise. Its not because they are my friends and I work for them though.
To see a live band is not easy, as you know music is dying, these are young kids who can play beautifully live. I am a real music lover and have seen many many concerts since I was a kid and I strongly advise you see Editors on stage because they are simply crazy. And if you meet them afterwards you will see how super down to earth they are. They are very young, despite that they are one of the best live concerts performers I have ever seen.

Editors’la aranızda karşılıklı bir hayranlık var. Biraz anlatabilir misin bu durumu?
Ne hissediyorsam ve ne yapmam gerekiyorsa onu yapıyorum. Müziği herkesten yedi ay önce ben dinliyorum ki bu oldukça havalı bir durum. Singlelar, albüm ve video için bana bir brief verildi. Ben de bunun üzerine gerçekten çok iyi olan bir albümü dinlemeye başladım. Hatırlıyorum No Harm bana geçen yıl Ekim ayında gönderildi ve “Rahi mod budur.” dendi. Böylece ben kendime düşen dinleme kısmını tamamladım bir kaç aylık sure içinde ve içime işledi albüm. İlk demo kaydını dinlediğimden beri bir yıl geçmiş ve şarkılar özelinde duygularım sürekli değişiyor. Nihayetinde söylemeliyim ki benim nasıl hissettiğim ve grubun modu arasında ortak bir nokta bulmaya çalıştım. Çıkan sonuçlardan çok memnunum. Şimdiden yeni planlar yapmaya da başladık.

You and Editors have a mutual admiration. Please tell us more about it.
I do what I feel and do what I must do. I'm listening to music seven months earlier than everyone, which is really cool. I was given a brief on how we present the singles, how we present the album and how we present the video. So I started by listening to a really good album. I remember last year in October I was sent No Harm and they said “Rahi this is the mood.”
So I did my listening part for a couple of months and it went under my skin. I have been listening to the raw material for 1 year now and my emotions for each song changes constantly. But I must say I tried to create a common match with the group’s mood and how I feel about it. I am very happy with the results and we already have new plans about it.

Sürekli bir işbirliği içindesiniz, gelecekte ne var?
Her video kendine has hikayesi ve karakterlerini barındırıyor, bu sebeple birbirlerinden ayrı ele almaya gayret gösteriyorum. Son videoda harika bir deneyim yaşadık. İstedim ki Editors kendilerini hayranlarının gözlerinden izlesin, özellikle de Tom’a odaklanarak. Ses konusunda süper yetenekli fakat vücut dili çok önemli bir özelliği. Benim için Mike Jagger ve Depeche Mode’un Dave Gahan’ı gibi. Bu insanların ortak yanı uzuvlarıyla yaptıkları jestler ve rol kesmiyorlar, sadece kendileri gibiler. Tom da onlardan biri. Gerçekten kendi gözlerinizle tanık olmalısınız. Onu artık iyi tanıdığım için bu hareketleri yakalayp insanlara gösterebiliyorum. Hem ses hem de karakter olarak bence genç yeteneklerin en iyisi.
Uzuvlarıyla ilgili ne demek istediğini anlıyorum…
Evet ama özellikle elleriyle ilgili bir durum var. Mesela o İngiliz ve harika bir aksanı var ve o kadar hızlı konuşuyor ki bazen ne dediğini anlamıyorum. Ama elleriyle konuşmaya başladığı zaman ne dediğini biliyorum, benim için onun dili elleri.

This seems like a continuous collaboration, what’s next?
Each video has its own story and characters; that’s why I try to separate them from each other. With the last video I had a great experience. I wanted to show what would it be like if Editors could watch themselves from the eyes of their fans, especially with a focus on Tom. He is super talented on the voice but has a body language that is very important. He is to me like Mike Jagger and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode. What they have in common is that they have gestures with their limps and they don’t act they are just themselves. And Tom is one of them. You should see with your own eyes. Now that I know him well, I can catch it and show it to people. Definitely to me he is the best of the young talents with his voice and character.
And I know what you mean when you say he has something with his limps…
Yes, but he has something with his hands. He is British and he has a beautiful accent but when he talks very fast I don’t understand what he is talking about. But when he does talk with his hands I know what he means; so to me his hands are his language.

Yollarınız nasıl kesişti?
Editors’la tanışmamıza Damien Jalet adlı ortak arkadaşımız sebep oldu. O sırada Damien’in kostümlerini Ricardo Tisci’nin, set tasarımını Marina Abramovic’in yaptığı Bolero projesini fotoğraflıyordum. İkimiz de Editors’ın müziğini sevdiğimiz için bir şekilde onlardan konuşmaya başladık. Bana onların videosunda yer aldığını ve istersem grubu fotoğğraflamam için bir görüşme ayarlayabileceğini söyledi. Ona grubu değil Tom’u çekmek istediğimi söyledim. Menajerlerine portföyümü gönderdimi beğenildi ve Londra’da bir toplantı ayarlandı. Ben bu arada hala sadece Tom’u çekmek istediğimi söylüyordum. Çekim çok iyi geçti ve çıkan sonuçlardan herkes memnundu. Sonra konserlerine gitmeye başladım ve gruba Tom’un resimlerini gönderdim. Bunun üzerine çok heyecanlandılar ve yeni albümün tüm görsel dünyasını oluşturmamı istediler. Karşılıklı olarak dürüstlük üzerine kurguladık ilişkimizi ve özgürdüm. Kapak görselinde küçük bir tartışmamız şu an kapakta kullanılan fotoğrafı ilk gördüğümüzde yaşandı. Bu arada o fotoğraf ham fotoğraftır, üzerinde hiç bir post prodüksiyon işlemi yoktur. Zifiri karanlıkta grubu boyunlarına kadar suya soktum ve lazeri suya attım ve bu çıktı. Albüm kapağını yakaladığımızı biliyordum. Büyülü bir andı. Ekibin geri kalanı da emindi. Ama ilk kez bir kapaklarından gruptan birini kullanıyorlardı. Bu konudaki tartışmaların çözülmesi iki hafta kadar sürdü.

How did your paths cross?
I met Editors through a mutual friend Damien Jalet. I was doing the artistic photography for his piece “Bolero” which costumes where done by Ricardo Tisci and set design by Marina Abramovic. Somehow we started talking about Editors as we both liked their music. He told me he was in the video for them and that he could manage to set it up if I wanted to photograph the band. And I said that I don’t want to photograph the band, I wanted to photograph Tom. Then their manager called me he asked me for a portfolio. They loved my work and we arranged a meeting in London insisting that I wanted to only photograph TOM. The shoot went very well and they had very good feeling about the results.
Then I went to see them in concerts and showed them pictures of Tom and they got very crazy about it and asked me to take over the whole artwork for the new album. They have been very honest with me and vice versa and I had freedom. We had a small discussion about the cover though. When we saw that picture, and that picture is a raw picture it has come out of the camera, there is no postproduction on it. I put them in the water until neckline in complete darkness and I dropped the laser and there it is. I know we had the cover. It was a magical moment. The rest of the team was sure of it. But as it was the first time they ever had one member of the band on the cover, discussions on the matter coated us two weeks until we resolved it.

Çok fazla canlı performanslarını izleme şansın oldu mu?
En az 7-8 kere ve çoğunlukla kulisten.

Bize biraz daha ipucu?
Tom utangaç ama büyülü biri. Aslında hepsi yetenekli ve biraraya geldiğimizde hep eğleniyoruz ve çok gülüyoruz.

Have you seen them a lot live in concerts?
At least 7-8 times but mostly watching from the backstage.

Tom is a shy but magical one. Actually all the guys are talented and when we meet we always have fun and laugh a lot.

Tom’la röportaj yapacak olsan ne sorardın?
Piano mu gitar mı? Çünkü ikisini de çalıyor ama piano çalarken kendinden geçiyor.
Ayakkabılarınla nasıl bir ilişkin var? Her konserde aynı çift ayakkabıyı giyiyor.
Sahnede şarkı söylerken izleyicilerde ne görüyorsun? Belki de hiçbir şey? Her konserde farklı davranıyor da. Bu doğal olarak gelişen bir durum mu?

What would ask Tom if you were to interview him?
Do you like piano or guitar? You know he plays both of them but he gets really really crazy playing the piano.
What is his relation with his shoes? Because he always wears this same pair of shoes each time on concert.
What does he see in the audience when he is singing? Or doesn’t he see anything anymore? As he acts differently for each concert. Does it come naturally?
